In drilling fluids(drilling mud),Nonionic Polyacrylamide(NPAM)acts as a multifunctional additive,mainly used to improve rheology,stabilize boreholes,reduce fluid loss,and enhance cuttings carrying capacity.It is especially valued in complex formations,high-salinity water,and acidic drilling environments.
Main Functions
Viscosity modifier&thickener
NPAM increases the viscosity of drilling fluid through its long-chain polymer structure,improving the ability to suspend and carry drill cuttings,preventing sedimentation and hole clogging.
Fluid loss controller
It forms a thin,dense filter cake on the wellbore wall,reducing water penetration into the formation,protecting the reservoir,and preventing wall collapse.
Borehole stabilizer
By adsorbing onto clay and rock surfaces,NPAM inhibits hydration and dispersion of shale,reducing borehole expansion and collapse.
Shear thinning improvement
NPAM helps drilling fluid maintain good fluidity under high shear(while drilling)and high viscosity under low shear(while static),supporting safe and efficient drilling.
Salt resistance&temperature stability
Unlike ionic polymers,NPAM is less affected by high salinity,calcium,magnesium,or electrolytes in formation water,so it performs stably in saline formations and offshore drilling.
Cuttings flocculation&wastewater treatment
It flocculates fine solid particles in waste drilling fluid,facilitating solid–liquid separation,recycling of water,and on-site environmental treatment.
