How to choose Cationic Polyacrylamide for sludge dewatering?

Choosing the right Cationic Polyacrylamide(CPAM)for sludge dewatering depends mainly on sludge organic content,pH,dewatering equipment, and floc performance.Below is the practical selection guide widely used in international water treatment projects.
1.Choose by Ionic Degree(Most Critical Factor)
Low ionic degree(10%–20%)
Suitable for inorganic sludge with low organic matter:river silt, sand washing sludge, mining sludge, boiler ash sludge.
Medium ionic degree(20%–40%)
Most widely used for municipal sewage sludge, food processing wastewater,paper-making sludge, general industrial sludge.
High ionic degree(40%–60%)
For high-organic sludge:pharmaceutical,fermentation,brewery,oily sludge,chemical sludge,hospital sludge.
2.Choose by Molecular Weight
Medium molecular weight(6–10 million)
General sludge dewatering, good floc strength and water release.
High molecular weight(10–15 million)
For difficult sludge,large-scale dewatering equipment,high shear conditions(centrifuge).
Higher molecular weight is not always better;excessive molecular weight may lead to sticky flocs and slow water filtration.
3.Choose by Dewatering Equipment
Centrifuge
Requires high molecular weight, medium–high ionic degree;flocs must resist strong shear.
Belt filter press
Medium molecular weight, medium ionic degree;flocs should be tough but not sticky.
Plate and frame filter press
Medium–low molecular weight, medium ionic degree;favors fast water release.
Screw press
Low–medium ionic degree,moderate molecular weight.
4.Choose by Sludge pH
Neutral condition(pH 6–8)
Most CPAM grades perform well.
Weakly acidic sludge(pH 4–6)
Choose medium–high ionic CPAM.
Weakly alkaline sludge(pH 8–10)
Choose medium ionic CPAM.
5.Practical Selection Steps
Collect fresh sludge sample on site.
Test different ionic degrees(low, medium, high)in beaker jar tests.
Observe:floc forming speed,floc size,clarity of filtrate,water release,and cake dryness.
Select the grade with the best performance at the lowest dosage.
6.Dosage Reference
Typical dosage:0.1%–0.5%of dry sludge weight
Actual dosage depends on sludge concentration and organic content.
