What are the side effects of consuming Carboxymethyl Cellulose(CMC)?

When consumed at normal levels found in food,food-grade CMC(E466)has no harmful side effects for most people. It is considered a safe,non-digestible soluble fiber and passes through the body without being absorbed.

Possible mild effects(only at very high intake)

In extremely large doses—far above normal food levels—some people may experience:

Bloating,gas,or abdominal discomfort

Loose stools or mild diarrhea

Temporary softening of stool

These are not toxic effects—they are the same mild digestive reactions caused by any soluble fiber(like psyllium, pectin,or inulin)when eaten in excess.

Who might be sensitive?

People with very sensitive gut or IBS may notice mild discomfort with high-fiber additives.

No evidence shows CMC causes allergies, inflammation,or long-term harm.

Official safety conclusion

JECFA,FDA,and EFSA assign no restricted Acceptable Daily Intake(ADI)for CMC.

No carcinogenic, mutagenic,or developmental toxicity has been found at dietary levels.

In short:Normal dietary intake of CMC is safe and has no meaningful side effects.
