How does Cationic Polyacrylamide work in sludge dewatering?

Cationic Polyacrylamide(CPAM)achieves efficient sludge dewatering through three core mechanisms:charge neutralization, adsorption bridging, and floc consolidation.Together they turn fine,difficult-to-dewater sludge into large,rigid,low-moisture flocs.

Charge Neutralization

Most sludge particles(organic colloids, bacteria, organic debris)carry strong negative charges on the surface, causing stable repulsion between particles.

CPAM’s positively charged quaternary ammonium groups rapidly neutralize these negative charges, eliminating electrostatic repulsion so particles begin to aggregate.

Adsorption Bridging

CPAM’s long polymer chains adsorb onto multiple sludge particles simultaneously, physically connecting them into large, compact flocs.

This bridging effect greatly increases floc size and strength, preventing flocs from breaking during mechanical shearing in centrifuges, filter presses,or belt presses.

Floc Consolidation&Free Water Release

The dense flocs trap and enmesh fine particles while releasing absorbed and interstitial water.

Under mechanical pressure, bound water is further separated, resulting in low-moisture sludge cakes and clear filtrate.

The combined effect significantly improves dewatering efficiency, reduces sludge moisture content, lowers transportation and disposal costs, and enhances overall wastewater treatment performance.
